Blurb – Making a book from your collection

Making a book from your collection

A lot of us have collections, but how often do we really do something with them? They recently came across an article by Kent Hall, Blurb Brand Ambassador, about how to make a real book about things that you collect. It turns out that all you really need is a camera, a passion for the thing you collect, and one of Blurb’s free book-making tool. So, read on, and find out how a camera collector made a book of his camera collection.

1) Photograph your collection: The big thing here is to be consistent with your lighting and focus distance. You don’t need studio lights—in fact natural light is usually best. Shoot next to a window that doesn’t get direct sunlight. Use a big piece of white posterboard to bounce the light from the other side so you get nice, consistent tones. And forget the flash in most cases. (oh, and don’t forget to give your items a good dusting first)
2) Do some research: What makes the things in your collection special? Chances are you already know, but take some time to put your thoughts down.
3) Get the right tool: Download Blurb BookWright , Blurb’s free book design program.
4) Put it all together: BookWright is great for text and photos. Just choose (or make) a layout that works for your collection. Drop in your photos and your text. You can even make an ebook at the same time.
5) Put your book for sale on Blurb.co.uk or Amazon: Share your passion with fellow collectors (and make a little money on the side).

So you can start a whole new collection of books about your collection.

Blurb interview

Making magazines with Blurb’s BookWright: An interview with Trevor Ehle

Recently I got the chance to chat with Trevor Ehle, the Senior Product Manager at Blurb who’s been working on BookWright, Blurb’s great new way to make a book, but, more importantly, a magazine. Let me share his insider information about the new things you can do with Blurb that make it pretty easy to make a magazine—whether you’re an experienced designer or not.

Apparently, getting started with putting together the words and images for your magazine in BookWright is pretty much the same as making a book with Blurb—but there are some differences he said you should keep in mind before you get started. Take it away, Trevor:

“1. The magazine format has the option of printing images and or text on the inside of the front and back cover. We think this is a nice design addition that is exclusive to this print format. You’ll find it in the “Covers” section of BookWright.

2. To keep printing costs as low as possible, Blurb requires that all magazine page counts be divisible by four—so keep that in mind when setting up the content for the pages portion of your book. You can always add blank sheets at the end to make your magazine fit this page count. But don’t worry—BookWright will let you know on upload if your magazine’s page count is incorrect.

3. The magazine’s spine is relatively small, even at larger page number counts, so it might be best to use an image, background colour, or texture on the spine in place of text. Given the limited space that is available and the variation of the printing process, you are more likely to get a final product you are happy with if you stay away using text.

4. BookWright has soft proofing built in. If you have ever visited our [color management page] you know how complicated this can be—yet it’s an important part of your book design process. We’ve taken Blurb’s ICC Profile for colour management and integrated it directly into BookWright to help save you time and make it available for everyone—regardless of technical ability.

As you drop images into your book, we automatically apply the colour profile to help manage colours more closely. (However, this can also be disabled in your Preferences view, if you wish to work without it.) If you are designing an ebook, BookWright will disable the profile automatically so you see the true colours, since digital files do not, obviously, need to be calibrated for print.”

Thanks, Trevor!

How to sell your Blurb books on Amazon.com

Blurb has always been a great way for people to make books about the things that interest them. And while it’s always been possible to sell your books via Blurb’s website, you can now sell the books you make on Amazon.com! Imagine, your work on the world’s biggest marketplace!

Here’s an interview with Donna Boyer, Blurb’s Chief Product Officer, on how the whole thing works:

What’s the most exciting thing about authors being able to sell their books through Amazon.com?

Setting up Blurb books to be available on Amazon.com couldn’t be easier. Once authors have uploaded their book to their Blurb account, they simply go to their Book Details page to select “Amazon” under the “Sell my book” options. That’s it. Once authors provide their info to get paid, Blurb handles the rest.

What can authors expect when listing on Amazon.com?

Once an author submits their book, it will be available for sale on Amazon.com within about seven days. Authors should plan to market their book to their network in order to drive reviews and sales rankings on Amazon, which can then lead to organic sales from new readers. It’s important for authors to remember that Amazon adds a fee for selling through Amazon.com, so the list price will need to be higher in order to make the same profit as a book sold directly via the Blurb platform.

Selling through Amazon.com is quite the game changer—can authors list their books on Amazon.com if they’ve already published them through Blurb?

Absolutely. Any existing photo paper book is eligible for distribution Amazon. For authors who want to sell on Amazon, it’s strongly recommended to drive all sales to Amazon in order to increase their Amazon ranking. But, if someone wants to sell both through Amazon and directly through Blurb’s platform, they can do this by uploading their book twice. It’s important to remember that the list price must be the same on both Amazon and on Blurb, per Amazon’s terms. This just means that the author gets a bigger profit for any copies sold through Blurb!

What are the biggest reason Blurb authors will want to take advantage of Amazon.com distribution?

A big benefit of Amazon is that it gives authors a new opportunity to expand their audience beyond their current network. The best way to take advantage of Amazon is to follow Amazon’s best practices for sellers—for example, choosing the right words for the book’s description, maintaining positive ratings and reviews, setting up your seller’s page, and driving all sales to your book listing on Amazon in order to increase authority. It’s these little things that will make your book more discoverable to new readers.

What one book do you hope to write and self-publish one day when you aren’t too busy focused on helping others with their books?

Actually, I’ve always been way more of a reader than a writer. So when I’m not too busy helping other people with their books, I’m most likely to be reading a lot more books by Blurb authors. I’m particularly interested in non-fiction—I’m fascinated by how much expertise there is across such a wide variety of interesting topics. My favorite part of my job is just how many books there are about things I’ve never even heard of!
